Hasandra R. Heyward, Author

  Upon the winds my spirit soars; tasting life fully.

  With every breath, I inhale the beauty flowing from deep within my soul.

  As my fingers embrace this dance of life...you get to witness the ache

  within the ache upon each page.

My Mother’s Eyes, My Father’s Heart

Passion is my mother

vision is my father;

opportunity the playground

upon which they whirl.

I heard the cry of desire

ringing in an endless call;

a beggin’ moment that

whispered, I am here,

dance with me.

I silenced the audacity of

negative thoughts as we

waltzed beyond the hills,

beyond obstacles,

above the voice of inadequacy.

But when did I beckon him?

Was it through my tears

and frustration that opportunity

found me?

How did he know that being

both asleep and awake seared

the depths of me?

A restless mind trying

to birth a dream;

breaking through the chatty

 whispers that claim, “she has no voice.”

I screamed into the dawn

awaiting my echo...but

 his voice penetrated

the heaped darkness.

Every time I cried out

he answered.

He dreamed when I dreamed;

while transforming me beyond

my greatest illusion.

I loitered but I was never lost;

somehow, the vision was always there,

hidden among internal opposites;

one daring and alive; willing to take

a chance, the other afraid to

stray outside the lines.

But my soul cried out needing

to be free from the dangling

cords of life’s puppetry,

and the ache within my soul

that haunts me.

As much as hunger and thirst are

a part of living, my mother

has fed my hunger and my father,

my thirst; courage became the

journey...opportunity sprung forth

from seeds fed by sheer passion

and a poet was born.

"I like the way you capture many sides of an experience... It's the balancing of mother and father, hope and silence, movement forward and quiet waiting, subterranean yearning with full blown longing: very nice".

"A chance meeting in a book store led me to "My Soul's Symphony."  Heyward's powerful images of compassion, love and what it means to care took me beyond that chance meeting.  Her poems heal old wounds, move us to reach out to others, and strive for our potential.  As a nursing instructor struggling to teach compassion and caring, this book is a valuable tool.  Heyward's poetry has found its way into my heart and into my classroom."
